Not because authenticity failed. Because somewhere along the way, “stop hiding” became “stop filtering,” and those are not the same skill. 
One builds trust. The other breaks it.

Psychology did see this coming, and some of the great leaders in the fields theory tried to account for it.

Maslow quietly revised the top of his own pyramid late in his life, and the textbooks never caught up.

What he put there points to a version of authenticity that is both real and considered.

I'm blessed that my work and family have kept me plenty busy, and for that full life, I'm certainly grateful! But more recently, I've really found myself missing writing. I honestly love playing with words on a page. 

So I've decided it is time to bring back a space for creative expression and a place to download all my thoughts ... this time, more specifically, on what it takes to lead responsibly and well. 

I podcasted for a number of years, and although it was great and allowed me to connect with so many wonderful listeners, writing has always been my first love.

I'll be writing a short weekly article with ideas on how I see Leadership evolving, what feels topical, and what I think we need more of as we navigate the complexity of being human in the modern workplace.

I'm sick of the same old boring leadership platitu I'm sick of the same old boring leadership platitudes getting dished out over and over.

And honestly, if we look at the state of leadership and the world, it's pretty clear the approach isn't really working, is it?

I have the privilege of coaching hundreds of leaders right now ... some individually and others in groups. Hearing their challenges has made me realize how much everyday leaders are craving an honest conversation about what leadership actually demands. Something deeper than the boring platitudes that even the big thought leaders keep feeding us.

Things like the fact that authenticity has probably gone too far, and now many leaders are seeing it used as an excuse for mediocrity.

Or the fact that many leaders find themselves walking on eggshells because they've been fed so much information they're not sure how to bring it all together, and check the boxes on everything from psychological safety, to belonging, to radical candor - all while ensuring they have people that actually perform. 

Because ultimately, business performance counts in the real world.

The complexity and fragmentation of the modern leadership conversation feels like a dilemma to me.

I want to take people deeper than that. To actually think more so that they can navigate this complexity themselves, rather than reach for another thought-leader's 10-step framework, thinking it holds all the answers.

So I'm starting Leadership Lately.

Every Tuesday, I will write a short article, a thought download of sorts, that highlights what I'm seeing in my practice. I'll throw in some psychology on the side and push you to think more deeply about what we actually need in the space of leadership ... both in our workplaces and in the world.

Because the world needs great leaders. Not subpar stock ones. And perhaps now more than ever.

Emotions are a form of data - they do not have to Emotions are a form of data - they do not have to be a directive.

This is a concept that aligns really closely with emotional agility and something that I think is so vital to understand.

>> We are not the emotion ... we are the one experiencing it. 

That separation is everything in choosing how we want to show up in the world.

If I'm being honest, I think authenticity at work If I'm being honest, I think authenticity at work went way too far. Authenticity is not an excuse to be a dick, to be unprofessional, or to use your colleagues and boss as a full-time support crew. 

In a recent workshop, a leader stopped me and asked, "Kate, how do we deal with the spillers?"

With a little more clarification, I realized she was talking about her direct reports who were using her as a therapist, and her office as their safe space to frequently "spill their guts," so to speak. 

We each have different parts of ourselves, and we don't have to show every part in every setting ... in fact, we shouldn't. And that doesn't make us inauthentic. It just makes us conscious and appropriate. 

I have nothing whatsoever against therapy, and had an amazing relationship with my therapist for multiple years ... but that was our agreed relationship. 

But work is for work.
