The best things in life are the simple things. The The best things in life are the simple things. The little things. The moments.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the pursuit of more . . . of happier . . . of someday.

And the tragedy is that if we only put our focus on the future, it can rob us of the immense joy that can be found in noticing and appreciating the sweet and simple things that we already have.

Gratitude is a central tenet in #positivepsychology . . . and while I’m all about acknowledging the big things we’re grateful for, I always encourage my clients to pay keen attention and to look out for the fleeting little things in our everyday experience . . . and to celebrate them.

Maybe that’s appreciating the magic of watching a flame dance in your fireplace 🔥 

Or watching a snowflake float through the air ❄️ 

Or spending a moment laughing as your dog leaps through the snow full of pure elation 🐶 

There is joy to be found in every single day, but you have to paying attention to find it ❤️

There is a dark side to self care. I’ve seen it There is a dark side to self care.

I’ve seen it in clients, and oh have I seen it in myself.

It’s that voice that says - oh, you have a lot on. You should rest. Don’t worry about that now.

It looks like self-compassion. That’s what your tell yourself anyway.

But it’s insidious and sneaky. It’s really procrastination. It’s avoidance at its best.

And yes…I absolutely advocate for rest. Rest is essential. This isn’t about throwing the baby out with the bath water.

But I also advocate for not avoiding doing the hard things. 

And it takes self-honesty to know the difference.

A simple thing has helped me immensely with this - I try to make doing the hard thing in the moment a habit.

Every time I hesitate for long enough to be conscious of a choice…I *always* choose the hard thing.

Oh and look…I’m far from perfect! But this helps.

It’s about turning away from avoidance, as you know that it actually causes you more pain in the long run. 

And yes, it’s HARD. Not like I like doing these things!

It’s not comfortable. It doesn’t feel like “self care”.

But facing up and doing the hard thing in the moment might be the kindest thing you actually do for yourself all day, so by that definition, maybe it’s more self-care than that cup of tea? Just maybe.

When you consistently choose the hard choice in the moment you:
- Go to bed with it done.
- You can close your eyes feeling accomplished.
- You can move forward knowing there is one fewer things actually left to do tomorrow.

You build positive forward energy.

I promise you that discipline is not in my natural repertoire of skills…but simply focusing on doing the hard thing in the moment, rather than shying away from it, is a life changing habit I try to keep front of mind.

The best parts of life are outside of where it fee The best parts of life are outside of where it feels comfortable.

I often pause in the presentations I do about stress and well-being and ask people to consider the things they are most proud of.

I then ask them to consider if they were also, at times, stressful.

Getting your college degree, raising children, working on meaningful projects … 
They’re all wrapped up with being hard.

Life isn’t designed to be a leisurely walk in the park.

Life will take you on some wild rides. 

But equally, some opportunities ask us to choose to be uncomfortable. This takes courage. This is brave. 

And when we choose to walk away from our comfort zones, that’s when we also get to embrace the excitement of what awaits out there, in the spaces others don’t go ❤️
